On my travels I stopped in Antigua, Guatemala to visit an old friend and to go to Spanish School. The school program included visits to various plantations, museums, and Mayan cottage industries. One of my visits was to a Jade mine, workshop, and museum. I had no idea of the importance of Jade to the Mayans, and their culture.
As I was walking out, the local artisan asked if I wanted to know my Mayan Zodiac sign. What was he talking about? He looked up my birth date and explanation, as well as my sons. I was amazed. I had expected some version of Western Astrology and instead I learned that the Mayan Zodiac is not at all like Western Astrology. I bought a pendant with my Glyph (Mayan Sun Sign) and didn't think too much more about it.
A few days later I met a a young Guatemalan man through a friend and mentioned that I had never heard about the Mayan Zodiac and that I was curious to know more. He made it his mission to introduce me to a number of Guatemalan Shamans and Day Counters, people specially trained to read charts. This began a journey that opened my eyes to something much more than I ever expected to find.
I toured numerous cottage shops where skilled local artisans create beautiful one of a kind pieces of jade and silver jewelry, hand spun yarn and weaving's, hand crafted leather pieces and beautiful wood carvings, many of them replicas of ancient Mayan art and cultural symbols. It was like stepping back into history watching these proud people struggling to maintain their culture and way of life.
The indigenous people of Guatemala rely heavily on the tourist trade. Their ability to make a living depends on making direct sales to visitors either from small shops or as street sellers. I realized that if they are to sustain their culture, they needed to expand their markets outside of Guatemala and the tourist market.
That was the beginning of a eighteen month project that has resulted in this web site. As I took this journey I learned a great deal about myself. I began to understand my strengths and weaknesses with a new perspective based on the energies of our world and how they affect all of us. Nothing I learned was in conflict with my other beliefs. Quite the contrary; the understandings that I gained gave me added focus, understanding, patience, and acceptance.
I am a person that is motivated to bring people and ideas together for the benefits of all. It became clear to me that if others in the Western world became aware of the Mayan Culture and Astrology that they would want to know more and that their lives would be enriched.
I believe that as Westerners become familiar with Mayan Astrology a demand will build for these one of a kind Glyphs and other of their crafts and arts. What a tremendous impact this would have on these people, their lives and their ability to maintain their culture and way of life!
That is the purpose of this web site. All the Glyphs, hand woven bags, and envelopes are hand made locally. 10% of all sales are also donated to local charities and families.
